Giving Tuesday: Bringing a Global Movement Closer to Home

As the holidays approach and everyone gets just a bit busier, this is also a good time to pause for a few moments and think about those in the community who need your help.

The days around Thanksgiving are packed with special events. Of course, Thursday the 24th is Thanksgiving Day. Then there is Black Friday, where everyone hits the stores for special deals to begin their holiday shopping. Small Business Saturday is important as well, as a day set aside to focus on shopping locally. Shopping online? There’s a day for that too – it’s called Cyber Monday.

Giving TuesdayThen comes Giving Tuesday. On Tuesday, November 29, Giving Tuesday is designed as “a day that encourages people to do good.” The organizers who created this special day in 2012 thought of it as a simple idea: take this opportunity to slow down after so many days of eating and shopping, give some thought to others, and give to those in need in your community.

As the original Giving Tuesday organizers point out, “everyone has something to give and every act of generosity counts.” Like them, at Share the Table we can also imagine “a world built upon shared humanity and radical generosity.”

What does that “radical generosity” mean for you? It could be purchasing extra food items on your next trip to the grocery store and bringing them by Share the Table. Your neighbors depend on the items we are able to provide through your generosity, especially as food costs are rising and financial restraints are tightening.

You could also consider purchasing a meaningful gift for your family members and friends by donating through our new Share the Spirit program. When you have no idea what to give someone this holiday season, give them the gift of a donation to Share the Table. We’ll send them a beautiful card letting them know about your generosity in their name!

Another option for you to participate in Giving Tuesday is to contribute to our building fund. Our community’s generosity has been amazing so far. We still have funds to raise, though, so we can build a new, safer, and more convenient facility and expand our services for our neighbors in need.

Giving Tuesday marks the beginning of Share the Table’s end of year campaign as well. It’s quick and easy to make a monetary donation so we can continue our work of the past 12 years. Did you know that 98% of our funding comes from the generosity of individual donors like you?

We hope that you will join in the spirit of Giving Tuesday and choose one of these options for your “radical generosity” to benefit your neighbors in need.

As always, thank you for being a Hunger Hero!
